Introduction

A surveyor’s assistant carries out survey work under the supervision of a registered surveyor. The registered surveyor takes responsibility for their assistant's work.

To become a surveyor’s assistant, you'll need to apply to the Board of Surveying and Spatial Information (BOSSI).

Before you apply, check BOSSI’s requirements for becoming a surveyor’s assistant. 

You must pay an annual fee to maintain your status as a surveyor’s assistant.

Eligibility

One of the following should apply to you:

  • hold a recognised qualification
  • hold a technical qualification in surveying and have 3 years practical experience
  • have at least 10 years practical experience in surveying acceptable to BOSSI.

What you need

  • a MyServiceNSW Account (you can create one when you start your application) or your OneGov account
  • your supervisor’s full name, contact details and registration number
  • copies of the following documents that are certified, in English, and in PDF format (maximum file size 4MB):
    • tertiary education degree, transcript or proof of enrolment
    • proof of identity such as driver licence, passport, birth certificate
    • applicant letter of duties
    • supervisor assessment approval letter
  • a passport quality photo in JPG format
  • a credit or debit card for the enrolment fee.

How to apply

  1. Gather the required documents.
  2. Select the 'Apply online' button.
  3. Select 'Start' on the application screen.
  4. Log in, or create your MyServiceNSW Account, or log in using your OneGov credentials.
  5. Follow the prompts to apply to be a surveyor's assistant.
