Operators of Class 1 load-carrying vehicles that don't comply with the mass, dimension or operating requirements set out in the relevant gazette notice, are required to have road access permits for the vehicles' journeys.

The National Heavy Vehicle Register (NHVR) processes road access applications online through its NHVR Portal.

Note:

  • The NHVR manages all heavy vehicle travel throughout Australia, with the exception of Western Australia and the Northern Territory, where you'll need to apply directly to the relevant state or territory road transport authority.
  • For travel on local roads, you need to have approval from the relevant local council/s or road manager/s.
  • Consent for both state and local council roads will be requested during the permit application process.
