The Service NSW app was designed with a focus on 3 priorities: security, privacy and a great customer experience. The app allows you to check your registrations, fines and demerit points, and access various digital licences and credentials, including the NSW Digital Driver Licence and Digital Photo Card. You can take advantage of these convenient services knowing your private information remains private.

Data safety

Your licence and credential data is safe on the Service NSW app. The data is stored by the issuing agency, for example, Transport for NSW. All your licences, credentials and settings are deleted from your device when you log out of the Service NSW app. You’ll need your MyServiceNSW Account email, password and PIN to access your digital licences and credentials again.

Activity logs

Service NSW collects other limited information about your subsequent use of your digital licence or credential in the form of an activity log. This occurs when you present or use a digital licence or credential. Some information about that interaction will be captured and stored in an activity log. The activity log is collected to ensure that technical assistance can be provided.

Permissions and information collection

You can choose to allow the app to use your device camera so that you can use the NSW Digital Driver Licence and Digital Photo Card verifying and venue sign-in features. You can remove this permission at any time using your device settings. If you remove this permission, you will need to use your plastic licence to sign-in to venues.

We don’t have access to your contacts, photos, browser activity, location, or other apps. There are some standard permissions that are available to the Service NSW app so it can function, such as whether the phone is online.

If a future version of the app requires a new special permission to deliver some functionality, we will tell you clearly why the app needs it and ask you to allow access.

QR code

A QR code is like a barcode. The QR code on your digital licence and credential can be scanned by checkers and police officers to verify that your licence or credential is legitimate. By scanning your QR code, checkers will see your name and if you’re under 18.

At participating venues, you can use the Service NSW app to sign in by scanning the venue’s QR code so that certain information, including your name and address, is shared with the venue. The Service NSW app will clearly show you what information will be shared with the venue and ask you to allow this.

Licence or credential checkers handling your phone

You don’t need to hand your phone to anyone, including police officers. A checker must be able to see and verify your licence or credential clearly. You might be asked to refresh your phone, change the angle of your phone or increase the brightness.

Connecting to the correct licence and credential

For security and privacy reasons, your MyServiceNSW Account is for you only. Your account can only be connected to your licences or credentials. Never share a MyServiceNSW Account with someone else, including a partner, as this might cause them to see your licence or credential on their phone. Refer to Adding the correct licence for more information.
