Introduction
Tradesperson certificates are issued for the following categories of work:
- plumbing, draining and gasfitting
- medical gas and related mechanical services.
You can apply to renew your tradesperson certificate online. Your application will be assessed to make sure you meet the eligibility requirements.
If your certificate has expired:
- within 90 days after the expiry date, you can apply online to restore your certificate – you'll need to pay the restoration fee
- more than 90 days past the expiry date, you'll need to reapply for your certificate.
Eligibility
You must:
- be a fit and proper person to hold a tradesperson certificate
- not be a ‘disqualified person’ under the Home Building Act 1989 or another Act administered by the NSW Minister for Fair Trading.
What you need
- a MyServiceNSW Account
- you can create one when you start your application
- you may need details from 2 identity documents (such as Australian driver licence, Medicare card, passport)
- your certificate number
- your renewal number (as shown on your renewal notice)
- your fee payment
- as applicable, copies of the following documents in PDF, JPG or PNG format (maximum file size 10MB per file):
- if you've been convicted of any criminal offence in the last 10 years or have pending charges
- National Police Check issued within the last 3 months
- completed Additional Details Form 3 - Criminal record
- if you're currently on probation or parole, a signed statement from your probation or parole officer including:
- start and finish date of your probation or parole
- what the conditions are
- whether you are meeting the conditions
- evidence of payment for any infringement notice or fine issued under the Home Building Act 1989 since your last application.
- if you've been convicted of any criminal offence in the last 10 years or have pending charges
How to renew or restore
- Gather the required documents.
- Select the 'Renew or restore online' button.
- Log in, or create your MyServiceNSW Account.
- Follow the prompts to renew a tradesperson certificate.

- You can continue trading while your renewal application is being assessed. If your application is refused, you can no longer trade from the date of the refusal.
