Introduction
Driving instructor licences expire after 5 years. A renewal notice will be posted to you 2 months prior to your licence expiry date.
How you renew your driving instructor licence will depend on how long ago the licence expired.
Eligibility
If your licence expired:
- within the last 90 days, you are eligible to renew online or at a service centre.
- between 90 days and 2 years ago, you are not eligible to renew. You must submit an application for a new licence.
- more than 2 years ago, you are not eligible to renew. You must submit an application for a new licence.
What you need
For all renewals, regardless of when the licence expired, you'll need:
- to have paid the non-refundable fee for the issue of a 5-year driving instructor licence
- to have successfully completed the instructor knowledge test for the class of licence you wish to instruct. The test is in English and interpreter assistance is not permitted (there are 90 questions in this knowledge test).
- your driver licence
- your driving instructor licence
- your current NSW employee Working With Children Check (WWCC) number (Class C and R applicants only)
- a digital photo of yourself
- 2 passport size photos (if renewing at a service centre)
- scanned PDF copies of your driver licence and traffic record details from an Interstate Licensing Authority (if applicable)
Licences that expired more than 90 days ago
Applications for these licences are no longer considered renewals. You need to submit a new driving instructor licence application.
You do not need to undertake a further driving instructor training course, but there are some additional requirements depending on how long the licence has been expired.
If your licence expired:
- between 90 days and 2 years ago, you'll need to provide a commercial medical assessment – PDF no more than 6 months old
- more than 2 years ago, you'll need to:
- provide a commercial medical assessment – PDF no more than 6 months old
- have successfully completed, for the class of licence you wish to instruct the instructor driving test (either manual or automatic) with 95% pass rate
Note: If you complete your instructor driving test in an automatic vehicle you can only instruct in an automatic vehicle - have successfully completed (if applicable):
- the Pre-Learner Rider Course
- Motorcycle Operator’s Skills Test (MOST).

How to renew
Renew online
If your licence has expired within the last 90 days:
- Check the What you need section.
- Select the 'Renew online' button.
Note: You cannot save and resume your renewal application once you've started. - Follow the prompts to submit your renewal application.
You'll receive a confirmation message with a reference number and a copy of your application via email. If you do not receive the email within 30 minutes call (02) 8848 8700 and quote your reference number.
If your application is successful a renewed driving instructor licence will be posted to you.
If you have not heard from Transport for NSW after 10 working days, call (02) 8848 8700.
Renew in person at a service centre

- Download and complete Driving Instructor's Licence Application for Renewal – PDF.
Note: Do not sign it – your signature must be witnessed at the service centre. - Visit a service centre and submit your renewal application.
If your licence expired more than 90 days ago, you cannot 'renew'. You must submit a new driving instructor application.
