Register a birth

Introduction

You should register your baby within 60 days of the birth.

You can still register a birth after 60 days but it requires more proof of the child's identification and can result in the application taking longer to process.

Only the parent(s) of the baby can register the birth. If you are not the parent and need to register the birth, please call 13 77 88.

Eligibility

You can register a birth if:

• you are the parent of the baby
• the baby was born in NSW.

Note: If your baby was born in Wodonga and you live in Albury, your baby can be registered in either NSW or Victoria, but not both.

What you need

• 3 forms of current identity for each parent who'll be listed on the birth registration:
  • scan or photo of each ID document, saved as a JPG, PDF or TIF file, maximum file size 20MB
  • file names must only use letters and numbers (no spaces, dashes, or underscores) – examples are: mypassport19.jpg, licence19.tif, lisacard19.pdf
• details of the parent(s) including:
  • full name, address and contact details
  • place of birth
  • the surname of their mother at the time of her birth
  • occupation
  • address during most of the pregnancy
  • date and place of marriage (if applicable)
  • full name, date and place of birth of older children from the relationship or a different relationship (if applicable)
• baby's details including:
  • full name – learn more about choosing a name
  • date, time and place of birth
  • birth weight in grams.

Note: If you're coming into a Service NSW Centre, you'll need to bring original identity documents. You cannot use the digital version of your driver licence or Medicare card.

How to register

1. Select the 'Register online' button.
2. Follow the prompts to register a birth.

Note: You can start your application and save if you need to finish it later.

If you cannot register the birth online:

1. Call 13 77 88 and request a paper Birth Registration Statement be posted to you.
2. Once received, complete the paper Birth Registration Statement.
3. Gather the required identification documents.
4. Visit a service centre and lodge the information in person, or post it to:
   Registry of Births, Deaths & Marriages
   GPO Box 30
   Sydney NSW 2001
