Introduction
Stamp duty is a tax imposed by state and territory governments on transactions. It is also known as transfer duty or general duty. The amount payable can vary depending on the state or territory.
If you'd like to calculate the duty payable on land or a business you've purchased, you can do this online with Revenue NSW's Transfer of land or business calculator.

Note: If you’re classified as a foreign person, you must pay a surcharge on the value of any residential land you buy in addition to any transfer duty. Read about surcharge purchaser duty.
How to check
- You will need to have:
- the execution date (contract exchange date of the property or business), and
- the purchase price or valuation price of the property or business.
- Select the 'Check online' button to go to the calculator.
- Enter the details as requested. Note: To ensure you calculate the correct duty payable you must use the correct execution date.
