Introduction

You need a dangerous goods driver licence if you want to transport dangerous goods:

  • in a receptacle with a capacity of more than 500 litres, or
  • if there is more than 500 kilograms in a receptacle.

Intermediate bulk containers (IBCs) with a total capacity of up to 3,000 litres are exempt, as long as they are not filled or emptied while on the vehicle.

You can apply online via eConnect EPA.

Eligibility

You must:

  • have completed the training course 'TLILIC0001 Course in the transport of dangerous goods by road'
  • be certified as medically fit to drive by a general practitioner (GP)
  • have a satisfactory driving history.

What you need

  • copies of the following documents for uploading online:
    • evidence from a Registered Training Organisation (RTO) that you've completed the training course 'TLILIC0001 Course in the transport of dangerous goods by road' not more than 6 months prior to your application being received by the NSW Environment Protection Authority (EPA)
    • medical assessment certificate
    • certified driving history record for the previous 5 years from each licensing authority that issued you a driving licence in that time
    • copy of the front and back of your driver licence
    • passport photo taken within the last 6 months that shows your face clearly with a white or grey background
  • credit card for payment.

How to apply

  1. Select the 'Apply online' button.
  2. Select 'Register to start a new application' and follow the prompts to apply.

If you're unable to apply online:

  1. Download and complete the Application for Dangerous Goods Driver Licence – PDF.
  2. Gather the required documents.
  3. Submit your application by post to the details on the form.

If you hold a current dangerous goods driver licence issued by another state or territory, you're able to drive a dangerous goods vehicle in NSW.
