Three bodies are empowered by legislation to assist in the operation of the NSW RFS, the:
- Rural Fire Service Advisory Council
- Bush Fire Co-ordinating Committee
- Fire Services Joint Standing Committee
The Rural Fire Service Advisory Council's main functions are:
- to advise and report to the Minister and the NSW RFS Commissioner on any matters relating to the administration of rural fire services under the Act.
- advise the Commissioner on public education programs relating to rural fire matters and training of rural firefighters.
- advise the Commissioner on the issue of Service Standards.
