Renewal notices and BPAY details

BPAY details are not available on renewal notices because Transport for NSW (TfNSW) must first confirm that you have:

  • a current compulsory third party (CTP) insurance policy (green slip), and
  • a safety inspection report (pink slip) for your vehicle (if applicable).

Once those 2 requirements are confirmed, you can then be issued a BPAY Biller Code and Customer Reference Number to pay for your registration renewal through your financial institution.

Note: If you attempt to renew your registration without a current CTP insurance policy and safety inspection (if applicable), the renewal will fail.

Trailer registrations

TfNSW BPAY details will be included on your registration renewal notice if your trailer:

  • does not require a safety check inspection
  • has passed its safety check inspection (if applicable).

Payment timeframes

BPAY payments normally take 2 or 3 working days (not including Saturday or Sunday) to reach us.

If you make a payment over the weekend, it could take as long as 4 to 5 calendar days before we receive the payment.

The registration will not be renewed until the full payment has been received.

For other ways to pay for your registration renewal, refer to Payment methods.

Note: If your vehicle registration is due to expire within 3 business days, we recommend you choose a different payment method.

Reasons why BPAY may not be available as a payment option

BPAY will not be available as a payment option 3 business days before:

  • the ‘use by’ date on your CTP insurance policy
  • your vehicle registration’s cancellation date (if your vehicle registration has been expired for more than 3 months, it will be automatically cancelled).

For other ways to pay for your registration renewal, refer to Payment methods.

Reasons why BPAY payments fail

The most common reasons why BPAY payments might fail while attempting a vehicle registration renewal include:

  • the CTP insurance policy expired before the payment was processed
  • the payment amount did not match the registration fees due
  • the registration has been cancelled.

Steps to take if a BPAY payment fails

If your BPAY payment fails, you'll need to:

  • check your BPAY payment details are correct and try renewing your vehicle registration again
  • contact your bank or financial institution, and ask them to do a BPAY investigation and then try renewing online again – we can help if you call us on 13 77 88
  • use a different payment method, like a credit card.

3- or 6-month term registrations

Before you try again, check your CTP policy’s ‘use by’ date which is available on your green slip or by contacting your insurer.

If you’re paying by BPAY, you must make the BPAY payment at least 3 business days before the CTP policy's use by date, or the registration will not be renewed and you’ll need to get a new 12-month green slip.
