Who can do DKT online

To do the DKT online you must be:

  • a NSW resident
  • 15 years and 11 months or older.

You can do the DKT online if you are:

  • applying for your C class (car) learner licence
  • converting your overseas car licence to NSW
  • getting another learner driver licence if yours has expired or is expiring soon
  • getting your NSW licence reissued after it has expired more than 5 years.

Find out more about eligibility.

If you have overdue fines with Revenue NSW, you can still do the DKT online. Once you pass you must pay your fines before applying for your licence at a Service NSW Centre. If you are unsure, contact Revenue NSW.

Course structure

The DKT online is a 4 to 6 hour course with three learning modules that you must complete before you can access the final test.

The DKT online is available in English and Simplified Chinese.

You don’t need to study for the DKT online. The three learning modules cover all the content you need for the final test. The modules are interactive and engaging, with quizzes, activities and challenges.

Do not use the NSW practice test to study for the DKT online. The practice test is only for the DKT in-person.

You have 12 months to complete DKT online and apply for your licence. If you don’t complete it within this time, your access will expire and you will need to re-enrol.

Saving your progress

You can exit the course at any time by closing your browser. Your progress will be saved automatically. However, you should complete the quiz or challenge you're attempting before leaving the course as you may lose your progress.

To access a challenge make sure that you've completed all of the topics inside a learning module. You'll know the topic is completed when you see a green tick on the picture, and it says 'Passed' underneath the image.

If you exit the final test before finishing all questions, your answers won't be saved. The test has no time limit, but you must complete it in one session.

Getting help from others

You may have support from family or friends when undertaking the learning modules of the DKT online.

However, you must take the final test on your own, without assistance from another person and without the use of any reference material.

Before attempting the final test, you must sign an online declaration. It declares that you understand that if you seek to obtain a driver licence without completing the DKT online final test personally, if you cheat, or if you make any false statement or dishonest representation, penalties including fines and imprisonment can apply.

Notifications

When you enrol in DKT online you will receive notifications about the status of your progress via your MyServiceNSW Account, email and push notification in the Service NSW app.

We will notify you when:

  • you first enrol
  • you pass the test
  • your enrolment is due to expire in 4 weeks (if you haven’t passed the test)
  • your enrolment has expired
  • your pass result is due to expire in 4 weeks (as you will need to get your licence before this or have to re-pass the DKT).

If you are not getting your notifications from Service NSW about DKT online:

  • check if your mailbox is full
  • review your junk or deleted item email folder
  • do a virus scan and use anti-spam tools
  • check if the network connection has failed
  • look at the rules you have set to filter emails.

You can update your email address and check the status of DKT by logging into your MyServiceNSW Account.

Switching between DKT online and DKT in-person

If you have not yet passed the Driver Knowledge Test and are eligible for both the DKT online and DKT in-person you can switch between tests at any time.

The DKT online fee will be charged only after you pass the test and apply for your licence in a Service NSW Centre.

If you have booked the DKT in-person and want to switch to the DKT online, you may be eligible for a refund of the in-person test fee if you cancel in time.

If you have enrolled but not passed the DKT online you can book and pay for a DKT in-person test.

Passing and failing the test

If you fail the test

If you fail the final test, you will be able to retake it after 12 hours. The test locks you out until this time has passed.

Your result for each test attempt will be clearly shown. The results will show the correct answer for every question. This will help show the sections of the course you might need to revise before attempting the test again.

When you pass the test

You can apply for your licence when you pass the DKT online and you are 16 years or older. The test screen will display a passed result and you will receive an email confirming this. You can also check your MyServiceNSW Account for your pass result.

To apply for your licence, please visit a Service NSW Centre (you do not need to make a booking).

You must bring:

If you provide different proof of identity documents to the ones you used to enrol in DKT online all your personal details must be exactly the same.

The service centre will already have a record that you have passed the test in their system. This means you do not need to bring proof with you that confirms your pass result.

Test fee and when to pay

You only need to pay the DKT online test fee once you pass the test and apply for your licence. You can attempt the test as many times as it takes to pass for the one fee. When you apply for your licence you must also pay the licence fee

If you pass the DKT online but find out later you were not required to do it, you must pay the test fee when you apply for your licence.

It is your responsibility to check if a DKT is required before you enrol.

Technical support

Laptop, tablet and mobile phone compatibility

We recommend that you complete the course on an internet-connected desktop, laptop or tablet using Google Chrome.

A Wi-Fi or wired connection should be used, particularly during the final test.

The supported browsers are Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge, Mozilla Firefox and Safari.

The minimum supported browser versions are the latest and the previous 2 major versions.

DKT online requires about 1.5GB of data to complete. However, data usage may be higher depending on your connection speed.

For the optimal experience, the pages will automatically switch to full screen so you can view as much content as possible.

If you are experiencing technical issues, please check your operating system and browser is up to date.

Accessibility

DKT online has been designed to meet Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) version 2.1 Level AA. This ensures it is accessible to as many people as possible, including people who use assistive technologies.

The platform also has text to speech functionality (in the English version) that reads the content out to you if you switch it on. This means DKT online can be used by people with low literacy and dyslexia. The text to speech function aids focus, comprehension and reduces eye fatigue.

Find out more about DKT online accessibility.

Viewing page content and loading videos

You can view the video content in full screen if you toggle the button to full screen in the bottom right corner of the video player.

If you are having trouble viewing the answers to challenge or test questions check your browser is not zoomed in past 100%.

If the videos or page content aren’t loading, you may have a slow internet connection. You need a download speed of 1.5Mbps for videos and 1.5GB of data to download the whole course. Content will download as you progress through the course. Some videos may automatically skip if they take too long to load.

To fix slow loading videos or page content take these steps:

  • clear the cache and restart your web browser
  • check for updates to your browser and device operating system
  • disable browser plugins or extensions (or view in incognito window)
  • try a different browser
  • check internet speed (recommend at least 5Mbps for optimal experience)
  • reset your internet connection.

If you are still having issues after trying these steps, please call Service NSW on 13 77 88 for support.
